I had a little over 4,000 poker online chips and was down to 3 players in a 6-max SNG. My poker online opponents had about 3000 and 2000 chips respectively. In this spot, I figure I am very unlikely to get called by anything but a monster, so assuming my opponents have average cards, or even good cards, they will be folding to me. It is important to keep the pressure on them when you have the big stack by taking the play away from them and forcing them to wait for cards. The fact that I have A-9 actually shouldn’t matter. If I get called, I’m assuming I’m going to have the worst hand, and the worst hand by far. I’m usually not getting called by a lesser ace, but might get called by a dominating one. I’m never getting called by KJ KQ QJ or the like. Sometimes I’ll get looked up by a mid pair, but will be in a good race. But when I make these statements, I’m assuming I’m playing against good players. An extremely good player might realize that I am making light shoves and start calling me light himself, but still only with decent hands. If he has garbage and thinks I am making a play at him, he still cannot call. He must have a decent hand, and when he makes a light call with a weak ace, any two cards, as long as they are live, are not a terrible disadvantage over the number of times the play succeeds in stealing the blinds.

When playing online poker, it can be hard sometimes to bet on the end of a hand when you don’t have the nuts and there are so many hands that beat you. Even when you are 99% sure that you have the winner, it takes an extra leap of faith to put a river value bet out there, in the idea that you could get reraised and have been slowplayed and end up giving money away for nothing.

In a lot of cases, though, when you are clearly ahead, it is asinine not to get paid off a little more. If your online poker opponent is not the kind who often waits to the end of hand to reraise his slowplays, and has exhibited early on already that he has a hand, why would you not make him pay the last fee to see your hand in showdown?

Table position in poker is an important strategy factor. Those who are seated to the immediate left of the dealer button at the casino are in “early position.” These are the players who bet first and second. From these positions, only the strongest hands, like pocket aces and faces, should be played because bettors in early position do not have any information about how the players behind them will bet.

Middle poker positions are those who follow the initial bettors but still have bettors behind them. They too must act on incomplete information. When playing from a middle position, a player does have the opportunity to observe the actions of players in early position. This gives them a slight advantage over early players, but middle positions are still at risk from bettors behind them. In middle position, play strong starter hands and depending on the betting action before you, consider playing a little looser than in early positions. If it’s checked before you, then play medium strength hands, like suited connectors or suited Ace with a low ranking card.

The players in late position have the biggest advantage because they can observe all the action before they must act. The last player to act (on the dealer button) is considered the best position at the table because it is last to act after the other players. Late position seats have looser standards for starter hands and offer the opportunity to play small pocket pairs or suited cards if there has not been any raising.

The seat to the button’s right is call the “cut off” because this player is in late position, but not last to act. However, a “cut off” with a strong hand is in a good position to raise which could force the button to fold, thus making the “cut off” the last to act in subsequent rounds.

I have been a poker dealer for quite some time. I’ve dealt in professional card rooms, entertainment-only casino nights, and home games. The most profitable of all, is probably the home games.

In home poker games, people are happy to not have had to travel to get what you’re offering them right next door.
