Chelation Therapy: What Is It?

Filed under: Health — admin @ 11:15 am

Chelation therapy is a procedure with is used to remove toxic levels of heavy metals from within a person. The process happens when the use of chelating agents is used. There are both conventional medicine approaches to using it as well as alternative medicines. In any case, this treatment, when administered properly can help to improve the health and well being of individuals.

During World War I, the use of poisonous gas was in place. Chelating agents were first used during this time period. The first of them was British Anti Lewisite also called BAL. This was the name given to Dimercaprol. This is an organic compound that is related to mercaptans. These mercaptans are organic compounds that contain sulfur. But, what does all of this really have to do with what they can do? Well, mercaptans are able to react to the bad metals that are within the body to capture them or to form compounds with them. In this case, the lewisite gas was an arsenic type of organic compound that was used in poisoning the enemy. BAL was able to bind the arsenic compounds from lewisite within the body. This then allowed them to be removed from the body without any harm being done to them.

Later, there were other chelating agents discovered to be used as well. These bind with metallic ions and render them less chemically reactive. This then allows them to be excreted from the body without any harm.

Conventional Medicine And Chelation Therapy

In conventional medicine, there are several ways in which these chelating agents can be used. Although it is rare for them to be needed and used, they can provide a safe and excellent way to treat several conditions.

They can be effective in treating such conditions as:

  • Acute Mercury poisoning
  • Plutonium poisoning
  • Arsenic poisoning
  • Iron poisoning
  • And lead poisoning.

They can also be useful in treating other conditions as well as other heavy metal poisonings. In any case that they are used, though, the patient’s health must be in a good deal of risk to warrant them being used. Heavy metal poisoning is quite detrimental to the body. In many cases, significant damage can be done to virtually every organ of the body due to the effects of this poisoning. One example is mercury in which neurodegeneration can happen. Chelation therapy can help to remove these toxic compounds from the body without damage as long as preformed correctly and within the right amount of time. The Chelation therapy can be used to treat in several methods including through intravenously, orally or through intramuscularly.

Alternative Medicine And Chelation Therapy

There is another side to chelation therapy though. It has been used to treat conditions such as coronary artery disease and many other degenerative diseases. In alternative medicine, they are provided through intravenous forms and are believed to reverse or slow down the progression of these conditions including age related disease.

One case in which alternative medicine gives help with the use of chelation therapy is with those children effected by autism. This condition is a neuro-developmental problem. Those that use alternative medicine may believe that the condition is caused by the exposure to heavy metal poisonings. And, for that, the chelation therapy can be helpful.

More and more individuals are seeking out chelation therapy to treat many of their disorders. But, it is a widely debated topic. Some claim that the therapy can help to repair all sorts of damage while others believe it is much too dangerous to do so. There are some dangers that can happen through the use or misuse of chelation therapy. For example, it can decrease blood coagulation and hyprocalcaemia.

Yet, for many, chelation therapy is one in which there is strong hope. The conditions of the use and of the abilities of these treatments range by those who are using them as well as the poisoning that has been had. When it comes to the use of chelating agents in the body, it can be said that there is a good belief that they can help in extracting poisonous heavy metals from the body.

Finding a Personal Trainer in Chicago

Filed under: Health — admin @ 2:10 am

One of the fastest growing trends in health and fitness today is the use of personal trainers. According to the American Council on Exercise (ACE), for the first time, the number of students studying for ACE’s Personal Trainer Certification Exam has surpassed that of those studying to be aerobics instructors. Even icons of American culture like Oprah have joined the trend with tremendous results. In 2005 she was selected by CBI (Club Business International) as January’s fitness role model of the month. Bob Greene, Oprah’s personal trainer in Chicago, was credited with helping her lose 90 pounds and, best of all, with keeping it off.

What is a Personal Trainer
A personal trainer acts as a partner who can help you set up a fitness program that meets your personal wellness goals. He or she informs you on the best exercises for your needs, keeps you motivated and tracks your progress. Many people fail to see results from their workouts because, without guidance, they are staying in their comfort level, using the same equipment and exercises over and over. A personal trainer will push you to try new things and tailor your work out to fit your personal goals.

Exercise
A good personal trainer will assess your physical abilities and discuss your goals before creating an exercise program. Once created, he or she will train you on each exercise and piece of equipment, ensuring that you are using proper form and technique, thus ensuring faster and better results from your efforts.

Motivation
Sticking with an exercise program can be difficult. There are always excuses not to go to the gym, so having someone else vested in your success is a great source of motivation. You know that your time will be well spent because you will be correctly performing your exercises. You may be financially motivated not to miss appointments and thereby lose the cost of a session. Accountability to your trainer will also inspire you to succeed, as a good trainer will monitor your progress and share in your setbacks and your triumphs.

What to Look for in a Personal Trainer

Finding a personal trainer in Chicago can seem like a daunting task. In such a large area it might seem impossible to locate the right person for you; but it does not need to be. Start locally by asking your friends, coworkers or doctor for referrals. Call area gyms and health clubs and set up interviews. You can also use online services such as Personal Trainer Finder or American Council on Exercise. When you have a list of possible choices, sit down with them and ask a few important questions.

Certification and Education
It is very important that your trainer be certified by a reputable fitness organization such as ACE, ACSM or NASM. Check the website or ask for information about the certifying organization. According to American Sports Data, (ASD), 5 million Americans used personal trainer services in 2001. At that time there were only 66,000 personal trainers practicing in the country. With such a gap between supply and demand a number of less than reputable web sites have sprung up offering quick certification.
Your trainer should also be certified in CPR, first aid and possibly even Automated External Defibrillation if you have any issues with heart disease.

Experience
In addition to education it is wise to choose someone with experience, particularly if you have specific goals or health issues you wish to address. Find someone who has dealt often with your particular needs. Be it Pre-Natal exercise, heart problems or even just the particular type of exercise you prefer, you want someone knowledgeable in that area.

Personality
Personality is a very subjective factor in who you will select; but it is one of the most important. You are looking for someone who will inspire you and motivate you to continue with your fitness program. It is vital that this person is not someone who is intimidating or even irritating. If you do not like your trainer you will not develop the give and take needed to form a productive team. Your trainer should be a good listener and give you their full attention while during your sessions. He or she should be focused on you, not answering phone calls or chatting with others. Your trainer should be aware of your personal style, some people respond to a drill sergeant approach, but many others prefer firm but patient guidance.

Warning signs
As you begin working with your trainer keep in mind that you are the client. You should be concerned if your trainer ignores or dismisses your questions or neglects any part of a complete program. He or she should not work you too hard. A little muscle soreness is expected but you should not be in real pain or fatigue. A personal trainer should never diagnose injuries or illness, but should refer you to a doctor.

Taking action
Finding a personal trainer in Chicago should not be as daunting as it may seem. Start locally, ask questions, educate yourself on the proper credentials and find a partner who will motivate you and inspire you to your best health and wellness.

The Ins and Outs of STD’s

Filed under: Health — admin @ 9:16 pm

STD’S are a problem that many of today’s youth are faced with. They are a real threat to our society. STD’s consist of any disease that is acquired primarily through sexual contact. They are infectious diseases that spread from person-to-person through contact with infected bodily fluids. In this, you will be exposed to two of the more common threats in the world of STD’s. (However, there are several more.)

Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STD’S) of our time caused by a bacterium know as Chlamydia trachomatis, which if left untreated for long can damage the reproductive organs. Symptoms may often times go unnoticed because they are usually mild or none at all. Un-reparable damages can be caused silently before the condition is even noticed, such as infertility. It’s very important to get a yearly physical and get tested to ensure your health. Most of the time there are never any symptoms at all in men.

Here is an interesting and very frightening statistic for everyone: between the years of 1987 and 2004 reported cases of chlamydia jumped from 50.8 to 319.6 cases per 100,000 population!

Some methods fore treatment for chlamydia include:

• Azithromycin

• Doxycycline

• Erythromycin ethylsuccinate

• Ofloxacin

*Chlamydia is one of the most easily treated STD’S. These medications, when taken correctly will eliminate the disease 99.9% of the time. (These medications must be prescribed by your practicing physician.) See a doctor if you have questions.

A current threat to the youth of today is another STD by the name of hepatitis. Hepatitis is a rather more serious one however. Hepititis is inflammation of the liver that is caused by a virus. The result in contracting this one can almost certainly lead to death in many cases! There are five different types of viral hepatitis. They include but are not limited to: hepatitis A, B, & C. Also know as HAV, HAB, & HAC. These are merely the most common forms of the disease. However, the only one of these that is an STD is hepititus B. All others have alternate forms of infecting.

HBV

HBV can survive outside the body at least 7 days and still be capable of transmitting infection.
The symptoms for all three types of viral hepatitis are much the same. Symptoms are much more predominant in adults than in infected children. If symptoms do occur, they usually include:

• Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)

• Tiredness

• nausea

• dark urine

• clay-colored bowel movements

• loss of appetite

• abdominal discomfort

Some of the treatment medication that can be used to treat this disease include:

• Acyclovir (Zovirax)

• Famciclovir (Famvir)

• Valacyclovir (Valtrex)

*These statements are merely facts that have been gathered. They are in no way a substitute to seeing a physician. If you have any doubts, see a doctor immediately. If you have been promiscuous in the past and have not been tested within the last 6 months, it is strongly suggested to do so.

Understanding The 3 Basic Types of Hearing Loss

Filed under: Health — admin @ 5:43 pm

Our ears have these two main functions; allowing us to both hear
and maintain our balance. However, throughout the duration of a
lifetime, the hearing function of our ears become worn out and
less effective. In fact, one of three adults over the age of 65
has a hearing loss and half of seniors over the age of 75 have a
hearing loss. Such loss is commonly due to over-exposure to
noise, heredity or both.

The signs of hearing loss is normally relatively easy to detect:

1) If you notice everyone sounds muffled. 2) It is difficult to
understand words. 3) You request others to speak more slowly,
clearly or loudly. 4) Often need to turn up the volume on your
TV or radio.

If you suffer from any of the above, combined with a desire to
withdraw from conversations or avoid social settings, it is
highly likely that you are suffering from a loss of hearing.

Most hearing loss results from damage to the cochlea ( a coiled
structure in the inner ear responsible for hearing ). This loss
is usually a result of prolonged exposure to loud noises of 85
decibel or higher. A decibel is the unit used to measure degrees
of loudness and is often abbreviated to dB.

Other common causes of hearing are:

1) Ear infections. 2) Abnormal bone growths. 3) Tumors of the
outer or middle ear. 4) Ruptured ear drums.

Other non-age related causes for deafness include Auditory
Neuropathy, Meniere’s Disease, Noise Ostosclerosis and Usher’s
Syndrome.

There are three basic types of hearing loss:

Type # 1 - Conductive Hearing Loss

This occurs when sound is not conducted efficiently to the
middle ear, which may be caused by fluid, earwax, infection,
foreign matter or malformation of the middle or outer ear.

Type # 2 - Sensorineural Hearing Loss

This condition occurs when there is damage to the inner ear (
cochlea ) or to the nerve pathways from the inner ear to the
brain. Disease, birth injury, drugs or genetic syndromes can
also be causes of Sensorineural hearing loss. Additional causes
may include noise exposure, viruses, head trauma, aging and
tumors.

A person suffering from this type of hearing loss may exhibit a
lack of speech comprehension.

Type # 3 - Mixed Hearing Loss

Sometimes a person may suffer from conductive hearing loss
combined with a Sensorineural hearing loss. This type of hearing
loss is known as mixed hearing loss.

A person can have a loss of hearing in one ear or in both ears.
The degree of the severity of hearing loss in each ear may be
equal or disparate. The loss of hearing can either occur
suddenly or over a long period of time.

Some people suffer from hearing losses that fluctuate and their
condition may worsen or improve erratically. This is usually
caused by an ear infection causing conductive hearing loss.

If you suspect you have a hearing problem, you should consult
your health specialist to get a professional diagnosis and
appropriate treatment for your condition.

Adjustable Beds - Not just for Hospitals

Filed under: Health — admin @ 5:39 pm

People, those who have pain in their backs should be careful in choosing the type of adjustable bed and mattress for sleeping on. There are a number of options to adjust these beds to different positions, this is why the name is “adjustable” bed. These beds are also known as Semi-Fowler beds, and can be operated manually as well as electrically. Patients will get their ultimate comfort by using these adjustable beds. These adjustable beds also come with luxury foam mattresses.

Functioning of Adjustable Beds

Sleeping on these adjustable beds may be more comfortable for the patients with different types of back problems, as the bed is slightly inclined to an angle of 30 to 45 degrees. In this case with the help of adjustable beds, the upper part of the body is positioned higher than the lower part when sitting in a recliner. There is also some support under the knee which helps the knee to bend at a slight angle. With the help of this combination (i.e. the upper part of the body inclined at some angle and the support at the knee) helps a lot in relieving the stress off the lower back. This position of the bed provides support to the curves of the spine and thus the entire body feels to be relieved.

There are also different luxury foam mattresses for these adjustable beds. A Split-top foam mattress is one such type of luxury foam mattresses for adjustable beds, which allow people to adjust the head and feet according to the ultimate comfort of sleeping, independent of their sleep partner. Nowadays there are also different electronically controlled adjustable beds available in the market, with the help of advanced technology and precision engineering. These types of electronic beds come with full range of relaxing positions i.e. it allows the patients to position the bed easily in different position while reading, watching television, talking on phone and relaxing, which relieves their muscle strain. Patients can even control the adjustments of the bed with the help of remote controls.

Benefits of adjustable beds

There are lots of benefits of using adjustable beds. Adjustable beds provide help not only to the patients but also to anyone who feels more comfortable in relaxing in an inclined position or while sitting on a recliner with his feet up rather than lying on an ordinary flat mattress. People, those who have Degenerative spondylolisthesis, Osteoarthritis and Spinal stenosis, for them sleeping in a reclining position can make it easier to sleep comfortably all through the night.

If the patient feels that his or her night’s rest is being hampered by sleeping on an ordinary flat mattress and feels better to relax in a recliner that gives the ultimate comfort to the patient, then it is very important to consider the option of an adjustable bed. There are different types of bed or mattress’s that work for all patients with back problems.

The patient’s own choice of sleeping comfort helps in determining which type of bed or mattress will be the best and will relieve the pain or stiffness in the lower backbone.

Over Compulsive Disorder - A Bit of the Other

Filed under: Health — admin @ 8:40 am

What gives a person suffering from over compulsive disorder (OCD)the right to chastise others e.g. children/husband and wife’s on their behaviour when we as a patient have no control over our own. Other peoples habits are very similar to that of what we do ourselves, antics may include irritating and annoying stunts. What is the difference between over compulsive disorder actions to that of what others do, fortunately for the others they gain control to stop what it is they do, as for the OCD patient I am afraid to say they have no jurisdiction or say on the matter when to stop?

Over compulsive disorder (OCD) comes with invisible powers where it leaves a patient feeling disorientated to an extent where life becomes meaningless. In other words life is not worth living if not able carry out their compulsions. (Depending on the individual)

You are not alone if you suffer from OCD the number in others are on the increase daily, we even have fellow patients who are unaware that they are infected. The reason for this is because symptoms are mild and seem to go unnoticed unlike the more sever cases where patients undergo medical treatment.

Over compulsive disorder (OCD) in the past was considered untreatable but doctors in the modern world would not be beaten and continued to research day and night looking for answers behind why a patient believed their OCD was a sign of madness or that their actions sent out signals of mental instability, in other words crazy. The good news is the modern world won the battle and brought hope to all sufferers with modern medication. Treatment is readily available along with people who care and want to help. All you have to do is, ask.

This is the modern world so be honest with yourself and face up to your over compulsive disorder (OCD) with revenge in mind. Retaliation as an ally in this battle is enough to win the war; it will take time but all worth while in the end. Start gathering ammunition to beat this invisible force by visiting the doctor, he/she may not see it but certainly are aware of its presence when the questions asked are answered openly and honestly.

Depending on you and the severity of your (OCD) symptoms medication and treatments will differ. How great your needs are to be rid of this illness that is slowly destroying breaking your heart and causing you and your nearest and dearest so much pain and suffering lies in your hands.

I envy how OTHERS are in control of their behaviour. I chastise no more. Give me a bit of the other any day.

Constipation is a Very Uncomfortable Bowel Problem

Filed under: Health — admin @ 11:33 am

Constipation is a very uncomfortable bowel problem where the
bowel movements are sluggish and infrequent. The bowel movements
are characterized by hard, dry stool that is very hard to expel
from the body. Many people suffer from constipation and often
have headaches, a felling of general unwellness and even
distension of the stomach. In some cases, the feeling that one
is unwell stem from the fact that most people believe that in
order to be healthy they need to have at least one bowel
movement every day.

Constipation is not harmful. It just cases the person to feel
very uncomfortable and bloated. However, complications from the
complaint may arise if the waste from the bowels causes the
rectum to become irritated or in rare cases, rupture. The fact
that people have trouble expelling the stool from the body does
not release harmful toxins from the bowels into the body.

At some time or another, virtually everyone experiences
constipation. There are over the counter products available at
all pharmacies to help with the problem, but overuse of these
products can cause addiction. Using the laxatives too frequently
can cause the muscles in the wall of the bowels to be too
relaxed and it may become very difficult to have a normal bowel
movement.

Chronic constipation is usually caused by not going to the
bathroom when you need to and putting it off until later. It is
also caused by dietary habits. Roughage, such as green
vegetables and fruit, are essential to keep the bowels in good
working order. Irregular eating hours, some prescription drugs
and the improper use of laxatives are other causes that the
medical profession has listed. Drinking plenty of fluids, eating
fruit, vegetables and bran are useful methods of solving
constipation problems. A regular time for meals is also helpful.

A sudden onset of constipation when all previous bowel movements
have been normal could be the signal of a serious disease. You
should consult your doctor if this is the case or if you have
prolonged constipation.

Can You Always Trust Your Dentist’s Recommendations?

Filed under: Health — admin @ 6:56 pm

Can you always trust your dentists’ recommendations? Think for yourself - in the last 30 years the health of our teeth has improved dramatically. We drink fluoridated water, which almost eliminated decay in our teeth.

We eat better, we brush and floss. Yet the amount of money we spend on dental care continues to rise. Could it be connected to the fact that the amount of dentists is increasing every year without any proportion to increases in population?

Let’s face it - your dentist is in a business like everyone else. And since it is a very attractive business (the dentists’ income is three to five times above the average), more and more students are graduating from dental schools every year.

What does it mean to your dentist? He has to face a very tough competition. He must pay his increasing costs (malpractice insurance, new materials, office maintenance) from an ever shrinking pool of potential patients. The only way he can do it is by raising income derived from each patient.

What does it mean to you? You are the one, who is asked to pay the price. As the marketing experts phrase it: “In order to stay in business, a dentist must offer bigger and better services”. Translate it into regular language - the dentist must try to sell you more services regardless whether you need them or not.

The amount of money we spend on dental medical services is already insane and it grows every year. A dentist pays hundreds of thousands of dollars for his rising insurance costs, office maintenance, assistant and secretary salaries. If he makes less than $400,000 a year, he considers himself a failure.

There is a clear contradiction here. You want to spend as less as possible on your dental care, and your dentist will earn less if he does that.

Yes, I know. Your dentist is a decent person. He wouldn’t do such things. I agree with you. But often there is no clear-cut solution (in most cases). I want to believe that most dentists are good. But why are their prices keep rising?

Check for yourself. How many seminars are on the Net promising to increase a dentist’s profits. And what exactly do they preach? Selling you services, which you might not need.

Evaluate your dentist’s recommendations using the same common sense, as you would apply to any other business proposition. Is it really necessary? Is there some other alternative treatment, which may achieve the same result?

With the amount of information available today on the Internet you can educate yourself in the new and not so new techniques used for the dental care. You might be able to save a lot of money that way. And yes, by educating yourself you can have better teeth.
