Anthony Loeff the European climber is reporting the scales for Chomolungma

Min Bahadur Sherchan last attempt resulted in the rescue of Lincoln Hall, an Australian climber who was left by his team in the “death zone.”

Bahadur Sherchan and four climbing guides reached the 29,035-foot (8,850-meters) summit of the world’s highest mountain early Sunday, said Ramesh Chretri, an official with Nepal’s ministry of tourism.

The Chinese were flying their airplanes over the Mount Everest and had Chinese officials in Kathmandu. Sherchan just 21 days away from his 77th birthday beat the age record set last year by 71-year-old Japanese teacher Katsusuke Yanagisawa.

Bahadur Sherchan returned this week from Nepal after successfully climbing to the summit of Mt Everest. As he planned for the climb, Sherchan told reporters he wanted to inspire fellow senior citizens. He also said many Nepalese have established records on Chomolungma or Mount Everest, so it was only fitting that the record for the oldest climber to reach the summit should also belong to a Nepali. They flexed their muscles this year all the in name of the Olympic spirit, but it was hardly spirited at all.”

3 Steps To Starting a Successful Fall Exercise Program

Ah, the crisp cool breeze, the invigorating feel of the outdoors as the leaves start to turn colors, the sound of kids laughing on their way to school.

Fall is the time for new beginnings. New classes, new curriculum, new programs, new start. You’ve relaxed over the summer and now you’re ready to reach higher, push further.

You’re pumped. You’re excited about starting a new season. You’re ready to tackle new challenges.

There’s nothing like feeling the momentum of new beginnings. If you’ve been wanting to lose weight and get into amazing shape, why not use this momentum to your advantage?

Momentum is one of the most underrated factors in achieving a better body.

Momentum can give you what you need to start an exercise program, stick with it and reap major rewards.

As we all know, it’s very easy to do something when we feel excited about it. This is not a bad thing if you learn to use it.

This initial excitement does wear off eventually, but by the time it does, you could be so far ahead already, that maintenance is easy.

Why not use this initial excitement to kick-start your treadmill exercise program?

Plan a program that you can get excited about, something that will push you just beyond where you are at right now physically. Then go for it! Don’t wait until that excitement wears off. Do it! Live in the moment.

With that in mind, here are 3 steps to planning a treadmill exercise program that gets results:

1) Grab a journal or notebook and write down everything you want to achieve in vivid detail. How do you want to look? How do you want to feel? What would you like to fit into? etc.

Reread this vivid description at least once a day. By keeping in mind the end result, you’ll be highly motivated to push yourself further.

2) Start exercising and make notes on every workout session that you do. How long did you go? What was your perceived exertion? How many miles did you cover?

3) Review your workout session notes every week and then add something a little bit more challenging to the next week’s workout.

For example, if your average exercise time last week was 20 minutes - up your average time to 30 minutes. If your perceived exertion was 5 on a scale of 1 to 10 then up it to 7. Make these little adjustments every week and you will be progressing leaps and bounds towards your fitness goals!

Plus the inspiration you get from charting your progress will keep you going long after that initial momentum is fizzling out.

By following these steps and using the fall momentum to inspire you, starting a treadmill exercise program becomes both exciting AND easy. Learn to use momentum to your advantage and you’ll achieve more than you ever dreamed possible!

Gymnastics Beam Equipment Progressions for Gymnasts

For all the skills in any beam skill training progression system, there are the equipment progressions relating to beam height and padding. All skills should be mastered on a line on the floor and progress eventually to the high beam. Depending on the equipment available in the gym, there are a number of intermediate equipment progression levels. They include:

1. Tape line on floor.

2. Foam floor beam on mat.

3. Heavily padded low beam.

4. Regulation low beam with mats stacked even with beam.

5. Regulation low beam.

6. Padded medium beam.

7. Regulation medium beam.

8. High beam with beam platform or stacked mats.

9. Padded high beam.

10. Regulation high beam with platform mats.

11. Regulation high beam.

Master Each Stage before Moving to Next Level

For safety and personal confidence, the best system is to gain complete mastery at each step of equipment progression. There are some coaches who do not like to include padded beams, especially padded high beams in their progression series, because it returns a crutch that has already been overcome at a lower level. This seems to be generally sound advice except when a gymnast, perhaps, is unable to progress because of fear caused by a fall and can benefit from more steps of progression.

Prove to Yourself You are Ready to Move Up

The most important person to convince that a gymnast is ready to move to the next level is the gymnast themselves. This means that gymnast should have to have 5-10 no-fall repetitions at each level up to the high beam. This equates to 45 out of 46 or up to 90 out of 90 (although not necessarily in a row) successfully stuck skills before gymnasts have to perform the skill on the high beam. This is a seemingly slow but sure method of success. Actually, because of the safety and consistency of this method, in the long run, it is faster and more efficient.

Know and Overcome Danger Points

Gymnasts should be trained and aware of the danger points of each skill that they are performing and concentrate on that first and foremost. For example, when performing a back handspring on the beam, the most dangerous mistake would be to miss the hands and land on your head on the beam. The second danger point is missing the first foot and possibly straddling the beam. Once those danger points have been successfully negotiated, the worst that can happen on any beam is a controlled fall. All of these steps should obviously be mastered on a line on the floor before even considering moving the skill to beam.

Land on the Line

Thus, when gymnasts begin training on a line on the floor, their first concern should be to always get their hands on the line. When they can get their hands on the line ten out of ten times, they have proved to themselves that they are safe from falling on their head by missing their hands and they can move to mastering the next danger point - missing the first foot.

Land Your First Foot

When the gymnast can get their hands on the line and their first foot on the line ten out of ten times, they are ready to add the margin of error landing techniques to the skill. When they can land the skill ten out of ten times without error on the line, they will have developed the true confidence necessary to move to the next equipment level where they will repeat the process.

Back Up If Necessary

This system usually works best with a strategy where the gymnast backs up in the progression if they fall at the next highest equipment level and back up and re-master the previous level to improve confidence and reaffirm technique.

Review the Progressions Daily

Every day, even with old skills, a modified (shortened) equipment progression beginning on the line on the floor is used to check for proper technique and consistency.

Eliminates Fear

Fear is often the limiting factor in beam skill development and determining the danger points and training for their safety often eliminates fear from the equation. If, however, there are other fears, additional progressions to eliminate or minimize their impact on the gymnast can be developed specifically to deal with that fear. This system minimizes fear because gymnasts don’t move up until it becomes obvious, even to them, that they are capable of performing thee skill on a beam.

A NO-Spotting System

This system can be used without benefit of any spotting. This will eliminate the need for the coach to be running around the beam during meets “standing there” or even actually having to spot during meets. Coaches may spot at early stages and equipment levels to ensure proper technique is being performed.

Golf Shots Versus Golf Swings - You Need Shots On The Course!

Why do so many golfers hit a shot and immediately realize they messed up?

There are two parts to a golf shot.

Part one is planning.

In order to send the ball towards the target on the golf course, all of the variables that Mother Nature has given us have to be considered and compensated for. This is what makes every golf shot unique.

The lie, the wind, obstacles, temperature, hazards, your personality, and your ability must all be considered before you ever swing the club.

…But it’s not that simple.
The planning phase of the shot must be complete, and the final decision must be without any doubt before moving on.

If there is any doubt about the shot you have chosen when you stand over the ball your mind will be distracted and possibly try to form another shot in mid-swing. That spells disaster.

Once a shot and a target are clearly decided upon, it is time for the swing. The swing has two parts; the preshot routine and the swing itself.

The preshot routine is where you consider any small changes that must be made to your basic swing to make the desired shot based on the conditions.
Again these changes must be decided upon without doubt.

Once the changes have been decided upon, it’s a good idea to make a practice swing or two to program the feel of the swing into your mind and to eliminate doubt about it.

For example: when I have to draw a shot, I have a tendency to swing to flat and not finish my backswing. During my practice swings I first pre-program my swing plane into my swing picture and on the second practice swing I add the full turn of the lower back. I might make a third practice swing to reinforce my changes.

Now it’s time to swing the club. At this point you can have no further conscious thoughts. Just step up and swing just as you’ve pictured it.

The problem is that you cannot just shut the brain down.
Whether you like it or not the brain will function and the brain will look for stimulus…unless you keep it occupied.

This is where the golf psychologists jump into the scene. As I have said before, Psychology is the study of our thoughts, accept….

We don’t want to think during the golf swing.

Do you think golf psychology can help you here? I don’t think so.
That is why I prefer to call this part of the game the mental game instead of using the word psychology.

The trick is to occupy the mind during the golf swing so that it doesn’t start thinking and ruin your shot.

To explain my method, let me reiterate an example from a previous chapter.

Exercise:
Walk into a room that you are not completely familiar with. Take a look around for a few seconds and have someone turn out the lights so that the room is completely dark. Try to navigate your way through the room until you are unsure and stop.

Question: What happened in your mind to cause you to stop?
Answer: Doubt about your surroundings! So… where did the doubt come from?

To answer that question you must understand why you were able to navigate any of the room at all. You remembered some of the room because you took a mental picture of your surroundings. You only stop when the picture isn’t clear.

Here’s the principle. For every physical action we take, the mind makes pictures for us to follow. When we walk, we constantly take pictures of our surroundings. When the pictures fade, we take new ones. Ever trip on something? What do you say? I didn’t see that!

Since the mind likes pictures so much, we will give it pictures!

During your swing pre-shot routine, put your swing and the intended shot into pictures. Picture yourself making the swing of your favorite PGA golfer. Try to feel the tempo of the swing. Imagine what has to happen at impact to make the golf ball take its intended path. Imagine the ball jumping off of the club face at impact.

All that is left is to step up to the ball in a balanced setup and run the tape in your head. If your pictures are vivid, your body will do as it has been programmed.

Although your eyes are closed at impact, your mind will stay with the ball waiting for the picture of impact that you programmed to be completed.

Using visualization, are you thinking about swing mechanics or the possible results of the shot? No, you’re just playing a video of the swing. The pictures you create can easily keep your mind quiet during the swing. Think about it. We sit down to read a book, but after an hour or so, if the book isn’t real exciting, we need a break. If it’s a book we like, we can read longer.

Think about the last book that captured your attention. Do you remember how vividly you pictured what was happening while you were reading? It’s not the book, it’s the pictures we create while reading the book that keeps us involved.

This is why we can sit down and watch a two-hour movie straight through while holding back a bathroom break to the point of discomfort. The mind becomes thoroughly involved when the pictures are great.

Do you still remember those great shots you’ve hit in the past? I know that I can recall some so vividly that I can feel which way the wind was blowing against my face when I replay them in my mind.

This is not something you can go right out and do. It takes training. Awareness training, because you picture things all of the time. Most people just take it for granted, just like they do with balance.

Start to take notice of the pictures you take when you do things. Be more aware of the things you notice and don’t notice around you. Have
you ever searched for something only to find it right in front of you? When that happened, was it because the picture you had in your mind of what you were looking for wasn’t the same as the real thing?

I’ve given up looking for things, let go of the picture, and realized shortly thereafter that what I was looking for was in a different package than I expected. I looked directly at it while looking for it in a different package and only noticed it when I let go of the picture in my head.

Why do we hit the ball in the lake when we tell ourselves not to? “Not the lake” doesn’t create a picture but the lake does! Unless we choose an exact target and picture it in our mind, the ball will be directed
to the lake.

What happens when we tell ourselves to keep our eye on the ball. The eyes get the directive but the brain moves on to other things. It looks for other pictures. If it doesn’t have any new pictures, it makes it’s own. They are called dreams or daydreams. Ever hit a shot and wonder where your mind was when it happened?

Since the brain is constantly looking for stimulus, give it the stimulus that will help you achieve your task. Take control.

Practice this routine on the driving range and I’ll bet it takes a lot longer to hit those golf balls!

The reality is that all of these things can, and often do, in fact improve your golf game. If you have ever played golf with a set of clubs that are too short…long…wrong flex… etc. then you have likely experienced the frustrating difference it makes to your score when you compare it to the positive results of using a set of clubs that are the correct fit and style for you!

Not unlike golf, the world of skating is the same. Skaters are always looking for a competitive advantage, so… with another summer of hockey schools well underway, and hockey tryouts just around the corner, we wanted to give you some insights into a fundamental way of helping you to help gain a competitive advantage with your skating… all it takes is a little knowledge…

A common question that we get asked by parents of young skaters and, by skaters in general is…. “how are my skates supposed to fit?”. This question is generally preceded with such comments and questions as “I hate my skates”, “why do my feet always hurt when I skate?”, “I’m just not as fast with these skates”,or how much growing room is enough?…

Even though skate design and technology have changed dramatically over the past few years, the fundamentals of how a skate needs to fit to be comfortable and perform have not.

Basically, there are three issues to consider when purchasing skates. First and foremost, is the obvious issue of purchasing a pair of skates that are comfortable.
Second to comfort, is that your skates must fit correctly to perform …the correct size (length), and width. (Not unlike the ‘right’ golf club)
The third consideration to the fit of the skates, but as important, is choosing the correct make and model of product. Far too often skaters focus on buying the same skates that they have seen their skating idol wearing or they look only to the most expensive skates, because obviously (to them) they are the best.

Clearly, what we know is… it doesn’t matter how much you pay for your skates or what famous skater is wearing the product, if the skates you purchase don’t fit properly your skating performace can be adversly affected.Read on for some insights in how to gain the competitive advantage by being certain your skates fit.

The fundamentals of how skates should fit

A skate does not fit the same as a shoe.

A hockey skate…in all cases will fit 1 to 1 sizes smaller than your shoe

size growing room is all that is necassary and will generally get a growing foot through one full season of hockey

Allowing more growing room than size can lead to blisters, premature breakdown of the skate and reduced performance of the skate for the skater.
Widths in skates are not the same as in a shoe…for example A “EE” width in a shoe is similar to a “D” width

Don’t just focus on one make and model!

Different models of skates are built to accommodate different levels of skater ability and physical size, different shapes of feet, and different price points. These are key points when considering what skates to buy. It is important to be honest about the level of skating that you or your skater is at. A skate that is too stiff is the one of the biggest contributors to poor skating performance.

Skate manufacturers skates all fit differently.

It’s possible that although you think you would like to try Bauer skates, the skate may not work the best for you because the “last” (shape of the boot) is not appropriate for the shape of your foot. It is important to try on more than one manufacturer skate if you are uncertain. Comparison and a great skate technician is ultimately the best way to help make the correct decision for you.

Skates are meant to fit when they are laced up!

The number one reason skaters end up in skates that are too big is that they don’t lace the skate all the way up. Because of the shape of a skate, the foot will only sit back in the boot properly when the skate is laced to the top of the boot. If you look at the profile of a skate boot, it is easy to see the “sweep” up to the top. As the skate is laced up it draws the foot back into the heel. A new pair of skates that fit will almost alway feel short when they are first put on the foot prior to lacing.

Did you know that…

for a non growing foot. When standing with your skates laced up the longest toe of your foot should slightly feather the end of the boot. When you bend your knees…as you would when you skate… the toe should pull away from the front of the boot. Any pressure points that you have on the sides of the foot or ankle bones should be adjusted (made comfortable) by the person fitting your skates.

How much Growing Room is enough?

A size growing room represents about of an inch. Allowing more growing room than a size puts the skater at risk of things such as blisters on the heel and arches. As well, the performance of the skate diminishes dramatically because of foot movement in the skate combined with a blade that is too long for the boot and hence too long for the skaters foot.

Make sure the foot is measured correctly!

Although it may give you a place to start… fingers… pencils… or looking down the back of the boot is just a big skate mistake waiting to happen. If the store fitting your skates understands the products they are selling and how to fit skates then they will know how to accurately use a measuring stick. To avoid the inevitable blisters, sore feet, and poor skating performance, that occur with poor fitting skates, be certain that a measureing stick is used.

Angler’s Attention

There is something that I have called ‘angler’s attention’. It is developed after you have been fishing, and in this article we will be concerning ourselves with fly fishing, for years and years. You can usually tell those that have it and those that don’t. Quickly rigging up your fly rod, and racing to a likely fishing spot, solely concerned about yourself and your gear, are telltale signs of someone not possessing angler’s attention.

I spent many years, especially when I didn’t have much time to fish, ignoring angler’s attention. If I could steal away even an hour or two, racing down to the river I would go. In a virtual panic, scouring out my favorite fishing spots, then cursing to myself, when they were taken. Frantically I would find a spot to fish, splash out there, and heave out my line. Fishing, at last, my heart would race, I would set the hook on any minute bump, and then have to untangle my line from a tree lurking behind me. Never paying attention to the fly I was using, there wasn’t time to change it, wheter my tippet was proper, what was happening on the water, nothing of the sort. Just get me to the water, and let me wet my line.

Maturity probably plays as much a part in developing ‘angler’s attention’ as anythin. Although I have seen many young angler’s very deliberately observing and then selecting their approach. Besides natural aging what really changed things for me, was actually observing a fellow fly fisher. Actually it was more observing him, observing me. I was fishing a small stretch of fairly remote river. Although this particular spot became ‘discovered’ sometime in the 90’s, it is still relatively pressure free after mid-June. Happily csting to rising fish, I happened to spot a gentleman stading on the bank watching me fish. He was quite a bit older then me at the time, but his presence somewhat annoyed me. Feeling watched, I gave it another five minutes or so, then headed in.

The next thirty minutes or so were spent discussing fly fishing with this gentleman in ways I had never thought of before. The knowledge this man possessed and frankly the lack of urgency to wet his fly were astonishing. He seemed quite as content to stand and talk about fly fishing as he was to actually be out doing it. He discussed with me clouds and mayfly hatches, the current time of the Callibeatis hatch, the onset of the Giant Stonefly hatch based on elevation, water flow, and air temperature, the need to have your fly drift naturally. The benefit of watching the naturals on the water, the effect of line drag, etc, etc.

After I had finished my lunch, did he finish talking. And then asked if I wanted to give it another try, motioning out to the water. I told him to go ahead, it must be his turn, and he said there was room for two. He was definitely a talented caster, one of the best I had ever seen, gracefully placing his dry fly expertly in the feeding lanes, on the edges of deep pools, and right below large rocks that were all favorite holding places for trout. Stopping when the hatch slowed and beginning again when the hatch began.

From this expereince, I have deliberately honed my own angler’s attention, and marvel not at what I notice, but what goes unnoticed by many. And many think it is unnecessary information, figuring they will catch fish using the same tactics they always have, or there just aren’t fish to be had that day.

For those that routinely ignore the hints that Mother Nature is giving you in solving the what will fish hit today puzzle. Next time try taking a few minutes to observe the minute details of the place you are fishing. Start with the big picture, the water flow, clarity, time of year, guess at the water temperature (some take a thermometer), consider the time of day, the air temperature. Then look closer, look at the current world of the fish you are trying to entice. Turn over a few rocks, look at the bugs there, some take a screen and place it in the current to view the offerings fish are being presented with. Observe the surface of the water, check for dimples, for feeding fish right below the surface. Actually spotting fish in the water takes practice. Then look for hatching insects, for insects laying eggs over the surface, and of course that greatest of all fly fishing prizes the rising fish.

Observe it all, not just before fishing but the whole time, watch for nuances, changes in the air temperature, changes in the sunlight, the hatches, the surface activity. Are you hooking up deeper, shallower, suddenly less frequently. Be a part of the fly fishing equation, at peace with it, in harmony with it, and you will be amazed how much more you enjoy it.

As you go along, you will find yourself unable to look at any river or lake, without observing it in this way. Even if you are just driving by it. You will be amazed at the hatches you can observe from your car, you wil find yourself analyzing the bugs on your windshield. Angler’s Attention will just be the way you looki at the entirety of the fish, insect relationship, and everytime you find yourself fly rod in hand, you will be the better fly fisher for it.
